“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.”
– George Bernard Shaw
Circumstances. What a concept.
That some of us are just born with more, and some with less. Some begin with opportunity, while some spend their lives trying to find it. And there is no real rhyme or reason behind the who’s who. All the good people aren’t born with more, and the inherently bad people with less. No, some of the best of us are born with nothing at all, and little/no hope for more.
I read this quote, and immediately identified myself as a “victim of my circumstance”. What a sad, sad identity to have. I am ashamed to admit that I have blamed my problems on “my circumstances”. Because if I had started off with more, I would have more by now. Which of course is a large, rotten pile of bologna. Because I could have had it all, and lost it. Or had nothing, and found it.
Well, I was born without the circumstances I wanted (needed). I have since looked for them, to no avail.
Guess that means it’s time to make them.
