We all have them in our lives. Lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce at a moment’s notice. They smile, they laugh. They seem happy.
They are the joy thieves.
They might be seemingly well-intentioned folks, but with an uncanny knack to suck the joy out of any potentially joyous occasion. This is probably nothing new, I’m sure we’ve all experienced it once or twice. But what I’m here to tell you might be a surprise:
Sometimes, the joy thieves are the very same people telling you:
You deserve the best.
And:
I just want you to be happy!
But, they don’t. Believe it or not, some people feel like it somehow imposes on their own happiness to see you so happy. If you make different choices, and those choices make you happy, then that somehow implies that you don’t agree with other people’s choices. Kinda silly, huh? But I promise you, it’s a thing. So here’s some advice, from me to you.
Three Tips to Live By (Forever and Ever):
Be happy.
Continue to be happy, no matter what anyone else wants, thinks, feels, implies, etc etc etc.
Rinse and repeat.
To some, happiness is a threat. So, beware. And don’t let ’em steal yours.
